A Matter of Time reviewed in the Toronto Star

“Eight singular sensations”; You may not find them on the bestseller lists of most music stores, but these eight discs of show tunes make ideal gifts for the theatre lover in your life, writes Richard Ouzounian — Toronto Star

Judy Marshak has been one of our best musical theatre performers for a long time, but she usually gets to play the funny card. This selection of songs is a wonderful surprise on many fronts. Not only is it slyly sexy and often touching, but it also introduces us to Marshak the songwriter, working in collaboration with the talented John Alcorn. The whole enterprise is tasty as well as tasteful, exuding the very best of the old-fashioned cabaret sensibility.

Two For the Road

If Hope and Crosby came back as a couple of blonde and brainy dames who sing like boids, you'd have Judy Marshak and Carolyn Scott.

They'll be at The Old Mill, Sunday, June 28, as part of The Toronto Jazz Festival, in the next of their 'Road' shows, following their hit at Statler's, "The Road to Obscurity". Again paying homage to Bob and Bing, along with Blossom Dearie, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Judy Garland, Hoagie Carmichael and more, the night will promise to make you smile, guffaw, sing and sip. Bruce Harvey will be caressing the keys and George Kozub will be slappin' the base.

Comedy hit Jewtopia comes to Toronto

The longest-running comedy in off-Broadway history is set to open soon in Toronto

Shirley Maclaine congratulates the cast after attending the show that night

Jewtopia, by Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson, has played to some 400,000 people across America since its premiere in May 2003.

It begins previews here at the Diesel Playhouse on Sept. 23 and will feature Matt Baram and Dave Kerr in the leading roles.

Chris O'Connell (Kerr) is a gentile and Adam Lipschitz (Baram) is a Jew. They agree to help each other find their dream romance in a resulting clash of stereotypes that was called "Hilarious, raucous, merciless!" by the Los Angeles Times.

The rest of the Toronto cast is equally high-powered, including such well-known comic talents as Judy Marshak (Beauty and the Beast), Jeanie Calleja (Slings & Arrows), Jane Luke and Aron Tager (both from Billable Hours), Allan Price, Jeff Margolis and Shelley Simester, all under the directorial hand of stage veteran Avery Saltzman.

The Toronto show is being produced by Michael Rubinoff, Lindsey Steinberg and Matthew Tishler and is here for a limited run through Nov. 4.

Tickets are $41.50 to $53.50 and can be purchased by calling 416-971-5656 or by going online at www.dieselplayhouse.com. For more information on the play, go to www.jewtopiatoronto.com.
